Drypoint, Edition of 7, framed by Rabbet in Waxed Cherry Wood with ArtGlass.
19.4 x 20.5 cm (framed)
Throughout each day Pia Bramley becomes aware of potential pictures in small moments of daily life and turns them around in her mind until she finds time to draw them. In this way she can work as an artist at every minute of the day, even when busy caring for her child.
She will draw and redraw the remembered moment until it says something particular about the experience, a process that happens every evening but still feels compelling and surprising. There is enormous satisfaction in simultaneously releasing and capturing something, as it is liberated from the brain and pinned down to the page.
When developing a drypoint etching, Pia works to retain the energy of a drawing in each print, so that a mark scratched in one brief moment can be repeated indefinitely and still retain a feeling of vitality. The process reflects the purpose of her work- to notice something small and fleeting and make it tangible and permanent.
This new series of drawings and drypoint etchings were made at night, at the kitchen table in her home in the New Forest. They are a record of the small ways in which we try to protect someone we love against winter weather, and hope that it is enough.
