Ilana Halperin was born in New York and lives Glasgow. She received her MFA from the Glasgow School of Art and her BFA from Brown University. Her work explores the relationship between geology and daily life. She combines fieldwork in diverse locations, from volcanoes and caves to hot springs, with an active studio-based practice.
A mid-career retrospective on Halperin’s work opened at the Fruitmarket, Edinburgh in February 2026 and will tour to Bildmuseet, Umeå in 2027, accompanied by an in-depth monograph. Solo exhibitions include Mount Stuart, Isle of Bute; LÁ Art Museum, Iceland; Cairn Centre d’Art in the UNESCO GeoPark of Haute Provence; National Museums Scotland, Edinburgh and Artists Space, New York. Her work has featured in group exhibitions worldwide including Hayward Touring; Museum unter Tage, Bochum; Kunstmuseum Thun; Centre Pompidou Metz/Musée du Cristal Saint-Louis; Sharjah Biennial 8; and MAMAC, Nice. Ilana shares her birthday with the Eldfell volcano in Iceland.
